Baptist Liturgy #IV

2008 February 20

communionhands.jpgWhilst listening to the amazing worship artist Lianna Klassen’s ‘Veni Sancte Spiritus’, I wrote these alternative words of invitation for communion:

We come to this table in reverence.

We come stained by our sin and humbled by our shame.

We come to renew our faith and to partake of His grace;

That purifies and cleanses us.

We come because we are Christ’s ransomed;

Saved from the law of sin and death;

And set free from condemnation

We come to this table to re-centre our faith and our lives on Christ.

We come in recognition that we are united in His love and His Name.

We come in expectation that the Holy Spirit will help us to comprehend the depth of the Father’s love for us, and enable our gratitude to be expressed though the lives we live.

    Outstanding.
    The older I get the more I enjoy liturgy.
    Why is that ?
    Have I matured or fallen away?
    Does my contempt for “the hype” mean I have somehow lost something.
    Does my need for things “quiet” rather than things “loud” mena anything?
    Is God being the Father rather than God being the Empowerer mean I have lost faith ?
    Does me wanting community more than miracles mean I lack faith.

    I love the simple expression of love and devotion.
