Life & Leadership is not a sprint. It’s a long distance race.
I believe that very passionately. It used to be a cliché to me until I needed to dig deep to survive in leadership. It became even more real to me when I became an ultra distance runner. The principles of long distance running are transferable, and reflect the same principles that successful leaders use, especially those who go the distance and achieve things that ordinary leaders can never dream of. Tired of picky musicians? Tired of cranky creative types getting into squabbles about guitar amp volumes, correct reading of music scores, the right fold back levels, the choice of songs, etc? Tired of rosters and finding people to fill in for people who can’t make the roster or who don’t want to play when other people are playing? Want to know the solution to your tiredness? Sack the band! Yeah that’s right. Pick up the phone right now, or even better still do it by SMS, or even better just post a YouTube video, and tell the lot of them they are S.A.C.K.E.D.

Open Source Christianity [see previous post here] works like Open Source software: generous collaborators across the world contribute resources for the mutual benefit of all. The people over at NeoLeader have put together a useful list of resources media savvy churches can access for free. Check out their site, lots of great links to what’s hot.
OK, I know you can’t wait to check out all the free stuff, so here goes:
Children of the Promise April 28, 2008

Have you noticed how good children are at holding their parents to the promises that they have been given? There are few things that can cause as much grief in a household as not following through on a promise.
Not only that, but kids are very good at extracting promises from parents. A number of tactics are used. The favourite tactic of our kids is to press us on something when we are under pressure. The hope is that we will relent just to buy some brain space. I pondered this on Saturday night as I cleaned the fish tank I vowed we would never have . (more…)

A radio station called me this week. Yeah me. They wanted an expert opinion. So they rang me. Well go figure, who wouldn’t? The only problem is when they phoned, and what happened. And then there’s the not so palatable truth as to why they phoned. (more…)
Pearls of the Christian Blogosphere #5 April 23, 2008

My newest Pearl of the Christian Blogosphere has achieved what I set out to do and have so far failed miserably: to create a pastors collaborative blog. Aussie pastors just don’t blog. Some may read blogs, but even less are prepared to put fingers to keyboard and nail their thoughts down.
Furthermore, Aussie pastors just don’t seem to want to do the whole iron-sharpens-iron thang. When I get rich I’ll fund myself to do a doctorate on why this ennui is prevalent amongst the antipodean clerical class.
Until then, I shall live in envy of….. (more…)

My colleague and I have developed a tradition we observe each month as the new edition of Queensland Baptist magazine arrives. We check the ‘positions vacant’ section to see if there could be anywhere else we could escape to, or alternatively we check to see if there is anywhere else which could make us feel better about where we are. This month we were not dissapointed. (more…)
Problematic Musicians in Church Bands April 21, 2008

Why is that every church has its fair share of ‘problem musicians’? I’m told its because musicians are ‘creative types’. I’m not exactly a musician. I’m a percussionist. I’m told that drummers are people who hang around musicians, and percussionists are people who hang around drummers.
If you have the blues every now and then with uptight musicians, take comfort from this video from Community Christian Church:
Baptists hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons April 21, 2008

The church in Australia across the board faces a massive credibility crisis thanks to sexual abuse. When I say sexual abuse I mean perpetrated by clergy on children and teenagers.
Given this climate and the bitter legacy that ‘men of God’ have left the church facing, you would imagine that the Baptist church would be super vigilant to protect against more headlines that hammer home the stereotype. Not Queensland Baptists. (more…)

#10 Rock & Roll
We’ve all been services that go on and on and on and on and on. Sometimes pastors are the primary cause, presenting sermons that have not been through the rigor of content and substance review and as a result are long winded indulgent affairs. (more…)
