The election farce has come and gone in Zimbabwe and it has been relatively uneventful here in Bulawayo and surrounding areas. Yesterday Robert Mugabe was sworn in, and held a Bible in his left hand whilst giving his undertaking to ’serve the people of Zimbabwe - so help me God’.
That was hard to watch, especially after being here for a week and seeing what he and his cronies have reduced this country to.
The plus side of the devastation is that it presents opportunity to the church. I have been deeply impacted by the way in which the church here takes a passionate and practical Gospel to the world around it.
Rather than go to a church growth conference with some hot shot, big shot megas-church pastor book yourself onto a plane and get yourself over to Zimbabwe and hang out with the church in all its manifestations here and see what they are doing. Go to a worship service and sense the passion and the faith despite the context within which God is praised here. It is humbling and instructive.
Africa always gives me perspectives I need to orient myself to when I return to my Western context so that I don’t become dulled into living by the same values which from here seem so indulgent. Churches here have had all the trappings and luxuries stripped away, and there is simple, basic and yet very powerful feel to how they operate and what they do. They can’t afford to mess around. The church ministers here in an environment filled with the most unimaginable suffering, corruption, fear and persecution. It has no choice but to be the real deal!
I am about to head back out into the bush so cannot post for a while. In the meantime, keep Zimbabwe in your prayers, there isperhaps still time left for momentum to build and for a new era to begin. The church seems to be very aware thatit needs to be ready to stand up in and provide leadership and guidance in such circumstances.

This post is written from inside the border somewhere in the vicinity of Victoria Falls. Yesterday on our arrival we found out from our driver that the Opposition leader had pulled out of the election scheduled for this Saturday. This was a no brainer as the ruling party had made clear that it would not hand over power if it lost in anycase. The campaign was costing lives thanks to the brutal campaign of terror organised by the ruling party. (more…)

I blog from Changi, Singapore on my way to Africa. Back to that continent filled with contrasts. Where you will find people at their best, intermingled with people at their worst. This journey marks the end of an era for me. This week I stepped down from Defence Force Chaplaincy after a decade in both the Navy & Army respectively. (more…)

I remember very clearly the exact moment I revealed to my family that I had become a Christian and that I wanted to be a pastor. It is burned into my memory. It was a moment of deep and lasting humiliation. (more…)
Web 2.0 and your church June 4, 2008

I thought I’d hit on a great idea recently. As a fundraiser for my forthcoming trip to Zimbabwe I organised a seminar called WEB 4 DUMMIES. The advertising listed all the new terms that confuse people (blogging. podcasts. vodcasts, social networking, social bookmarking, tags, RSS, etc).
The seminar was designed to give people a basic overview of how the Web has changed, including my top ten Web 2.0 sites and the best free stuff on the Web. I didn’t know who would come, what their level of knowledge was, and whether or not would make any sense at all. To make matters worse it poured with rain the whole day and people were ringing up to see if the seminar had been cancelled. I think we’ve been in drought so long that people don’t come out if its raining any more! (more…)

One of the biggest missionary forces in the world is Baptist. To be specific, the IMB [International Missionary Board] of the Southern Baptist Convention is a mighty force. There’s also plenty of politics that surround it.
Since 2005 they have instituted a policy whereby they would refuse to send any candidates to the mission field who had not been baptised in a church that was either Southern Baptist or that exactly shared their theology on issues like the security of the believer. They also passed a policy that kept anyone from the mission field that had a private prayer language. In other words: tongues. Speak in tongues and you can’t become a worker for the harvest under the watch of the IMB. (more…)

Not according to the rules and regulations of the Southern Baptist Convention. Should you be an ordained pastor in the SBC, OJ is about as good as it is going to get. I’ve been following a debate over at SBCToday where probitionists have been urging partakers like me in earnest tones against supping with the devil. (more…)

Back in the good old days of missionary service, the ‘call’ came with very little certainties, other than the fact that missionaries would need to trust God like they had never before given the uncertainties that lay before them. Not so these days in short term missions. Most things are necessarily put in place beforehand, all you need to do is go and prosecute your pre-planned daily agenda. (more…)
