This post is written from inside the border somewhere in the vicinity of Victoria Falls. Yesterday on our arrival we found out from our driver that the Opposition leader had pulled out of the election scheduled for this Saturday. This was a no brainer as the ruling party had made clear that it would not hand over power if it lost in anycase. The campaign was costing lives thanks to the brutal campaign of terror organised by the ruling party.
This may make life a little less tense here during the next two weeks for myself and the team that I am a part of. We had some sobering experiences this morning. Firstly we ventured into town to have breakfast, harassed all the way by beggars and people trying to sell us anything from local currency, to souvenirs and other illicit things. Breakfast cost us each the equivalent of $800 for locals. In other words, in Australia or the USA it would cost somewhere around $800 in equivalent terms.
We bought 144 Billion Dollars worth of bottled water at the supermarket [in Zim currency]. That equates to about $20. We also took delivery of a new 50 Billion dollar note which equates to about $7.
A utility vehicle filled with ruling party thugs drove around the town chucking around election leaflets [for an election which I presume is now cancelled].
Life is hard here for local Zimbabweans. Those here in Vic Falls can at least get some foreign currency thanks to business with tourists, but only the minority.
Mugabe has said that only God can remove him. That is an interesting claim and a challenge I think believers from all around the world should rise to and pray him out! More from Zimbabwe in the days to come.
