Could Protestants Ever Have a Pope? July 21, 2008

World Youth Day has come and gone in thoroughly [or supposedly] secular Australia. Our t.v. screens have been filled night after night with endless streams of shiny, happy, bright, young international things marching happily along, singing and proclaiming their faith in Jesus.
Protestants don’t really have the capacity to bring young people together like this, given our divided & schismatic nature. Secular Australia likes to assume that the church is filled with ageing people and will die out some time soon. The images from World Youth Day clearly show a new vibrant [did I really just use that word?] generation who seek after God. The images contradict the popular notion of a doddering church.
The question I have in my mind is whether or not this would ever be possible with Protestants? I personally don’t think so. We are way too divided, and way to committed to our own favourite personalities or brands to come together in such astonishing unity.
We could definitely not have a Pope. Theology aside [the primary reason we would not have one!], we could never unite ourselves enough to accept leadership in that way coming from a single source. The various personalities and ’stars’ that we all have provide too much of a comparative field for that to ever be possible!
Whilst my theological views lead me to view the institution and practises of the Catholic church with grave suspicion, Catholics themselves regularly contradict my thoughts and feelings. I know some brothers and sisters in Christ who are Catholic who live lives of passionate worship and mission continually. The presence of the Spirit and His gifting within them shine out. In fact many of my Catholic friends leave your average suburban Baptist in the dark when it comes to visible signs of life and mission!
So I left wondering what to make of the after effects of World Youth Day. At its most basic I would much prefer a more unified church, that would come together in such visible ways to contradict the popular notions [urban myths] about a dying and inconsequential church. Of course I don;t want that to be at the expense of good theology - especially ‘my’ theology!

You are moving in the wrong circles….and your last comment may betray you!
Its like the old joke….Someone comes to heaven and asks St Peter who the sour old group of people huddling together in the corner are, and St Peter says, “they are the baptists, they think they are the only ones here”
I just went to Hillsong 2008….30, 000 + people as well as a packed Youth stream which met at the Hillsong facility. From ever possible denomination.
Houston….the protestant pope??
After watching the ABC documentary on Catholic Priests last night I am comfortable with the theological circles I move in. Essentially the doco was about the shortage of priests and the resistance of the Catholic church to ordaining married Catholic men [they do ordain married Anglican men - go figure!].
The crisis boils down to one primary issue: the Eucharist or Mass. There’s not enough priests around to ’say’ it. A nun who effectively runs the Catholic church in Jondawae said that it is in effect “after all, what people come for”.
Moving from issues of mass to critical mass, no Mark, BH is not a candidate for Protestant Pope thank you very much. I’ll cut you a deal ok? I’ll watch the Sunday morning Hillsong t.v. broadcasts and the next time Brian opens the Bible and expounds something from it [rather than positivity and potential], I’ll at least think about it.
Oh yeah, some financial visibility would also do his case a world of good…
Someone surrounded by a bit less controversy will do please. I think Rick Warren may be in the running, but how can you have a Pope who wears oversized Hawaiin shirts? Hybels is out the running cos you can’t have a Pope who owns a yacht. Driscoll is out the running cos you can’t have a Pope who wears black jeans the whole time.
Any other suggestions for Protestant Pope more than welcome.
I have one of the best messages on gossip and leadership given by Houston…I must send you a copy.
Driscoll ticks too many people off…but I do like him!
