Non-spiritual Spirituality August 2, 2008

Clive Hamilton is a bright spark.  In fact so bright, that it is ‘Professor Clive Hamilton’ to you thanks.  Despite his academic credentials and the substantial track record he has as a thinker [Professor Hamilton founded the Australia Institute think tank, which he left in February after 14 years.], he has come up with an absolute corker of an idea which I think should be nominated for the Darwin Awards.

In his new book which he is now spruiking over the airwaves entitled ‘The Freedom Paradox: Towards a Post-secular Ethics.’, he argues for a return to what can best be described as a non-spiritual spirituality.  He is of the view that people are profoundly unhappy despite their material wealth [umm that one is about 200 years old Clive!], and that there was confusion about morality because people don’t know what moral rules to live by [thank your fellow secular humanists for that Prof!].

The book argues [apparently, I have not read it and unless I can get some stay awake pills from my local truckie I won't be] for a new kind of metaphysical.  He is of the view that people identified fundamentally with other human beings and by articulating and building on that sense of a “moral self”, a new moral certainty could be constructed.

Well good luck mate, but I don’t rate your chances.  I do thank you however for revealing the emptiness of life without a spiritual dimension, the shallowness of materialism, and also helping to make the case for the the Good News of God’s grace!
