After a long year blogging, I’m off for two weeks. I was tempted to take a laptop but I need to spend time connecting with my family rather than the internet. To all who land here, may you know the Hope that many celebrate at Christmas – Emmanuel, God with us.
In the words of the Apostle Paul:
Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15from whom his whole family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Théodore Malgorne doesn’t quite realise the debates he has caused around the world. I have a Jean Guichard framed poster in my office that features him standing outside the door of his lighthouse, seemingly about to be engulfed by a large wave.
I bought the image because of two reasons. Firstly the picture talks to me of security in the midst of storms [which many pastors can relate to], and secondly because it was an absolute bargain at a garage sale.
The picture has caused many an argument in my office. Instead of appreciating the picture for what it is most people say something along the lines of “Nah!, that guy has been Photoshopped into the picture, that’s not real!”. Some people authoritatively inform me that Théodore died seconds after the picture was taken.
I took the time to settle the issue once and for all, and did some research to determine the truth. You’ll never guess the outcome: (more…)

Have you ever thought of your church as a tribe? You probably have thought that your youth group is one, but perhaps not your church. Seth Godin’s online Q&A book about Tribes is a very interesting read. Check it out here.

Atheists are trying a new angle, taking out advertisements on London buses entitled, “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”.
Richard Dawkins has helped fund the adverts which will no doubt cause a great deal of hand wringing. I welcome them, because they will make people think. I rather think the fact that they could not bring themselves to declare definitively that there is no God is telling. I think this weak stunt reflects more on them than on the Christian faith. Where have all the real atheists with genuine conviction gone? Read all about it here.

After years of holding out against the Facebook trend I finally had my arm twisted and recently signed up and Photoshopped a few pics of myself to appear way younger and more buff. [Even more buff than I am in real life]. I had been holding out simply because I have very little time for online frivolity, preferring to publish piffle and drivel on blogs like this instead.

If you want a voice or a position at the table of influence at a national or state level in the Baptist Church in Australia it helps greatly if you are a male, and if you are grey or greying. [A beard or chin strap comes in handy too.] There are exceptions to the rule of course, but broadly speaking Grey Power remains the unchallenged status quo, and incumbency the key to retaining that power.
In a previous incarnation, I had reason to attend the Baptist Union of Australia meetings annually. They were held at Whitley College and at morning tea the great and the grey of the Baptist Union would spill out into the central courtyard of the circular university residences [which we occupied during the semester break].
This previous incarnation was many years ago now, and a lot of the great and the grey had already been in power for some time. They still are. (more…)

Being averse to Christian celebrity culture I tend to avoid where the masses congregate. Call me a spoilsport if you want but I try to avoid the sheep genes within me as much as possible. The biggest Christian celebrity of the blogoverse would be He Who Must Be Downloaded – Driscoll of course!
Unlike other celebrities though, Driscoll is a man of substance and has things to say that are worth listening to. Hence his fame. During his recent visit to Sydney he gave a stand and deliver talk assessing issues that Sydney Anglicans need to address. I found many of his points related very strongly to the Baptist church, particularly in Queensland, if not in the rest of Australia.
Mark gave an address to Sydney Anglicans where he outlined 18 hard hitting points which where his assessment of the Sydney Anglicans.
