Atheists are trying a new angle, taking out advertisements on London buses entitled, “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life”.

Richard Dawkins has helped fund the adverts which will no doubt cause a great deal of hand wringing.  I welcome them, because they will make people think.  I rather think the fact that they could not bring themselves to declare definitively that there is no God is telling.  I think this weak stunt reflects more on them than on the Christian faith. Where have all the real atheists with genuine conviction gone? Read all about it here.

After years of holding out against the Facebook trend I finally had my arm twisted and recently signed up and Photoshopped a few pics of myself to appear way younger and more buff. [Even more buff than I am in real life].  I had been holding out simply because I have very little time for online frivolity, preferring to publish piffle and drivel on blogs like this instead.

I made a few startling discoveries on my first day of existence on Facebook: (more…)

If you want a voice or a position at the table of influence at a national or state level in the Baptist Church in Australia it helps greatly if you are a male, and if you are grey or greying. [A beard or chin strap comes in handy too.] There are exceptions to the rule of course, but broadly speaking Grey Power remains the unchallenged status quo, and incumbency the key to retaining that power.

In a previous incarnation, I had reason to attend the Baptist Union of Australia meetings annually. They were held at Whitley College and at morning tea the great and the grey of the Baptist Union would spill out into the central courtyard of the circular university residences [which we occupied during the semester break].

This previous incarnation was many years ago now, and a lot of the great and the grey had already been in power for some time.  They still are.  (more…)

Being averse to Christian celebrity culture I tend to avoid where the masses congregate. Call me a spoilsport if you want but I try to avoid the sheep genes within me as much as possible.  The biggest Christian celebrity of the blogoverse would be He Who Must Be Downloaded - Driscoll of course!

Unlike other celebrities though, Driscoll is a man of substance and has things to say that are worth listening to.  Hence his fame.  During his recent visit to Sydney he gave a stand and deliver talk assessing issues that Sydney Anglicans need to address.  I found many of his points related very strongly to the Baptist church, particularly in Queensland, if not in the rest of Australia.

Mark gave an address to Sydney Anglicans where he outlined 18 hard hitting points which where his assessment of the Sydney Anglicans.

In point 11 he had the following to say: (more…)

This is a cynical take on a serious issue but I guess that Catholic Church in particular has attracted this.

Every now and then you hear about a surprise conversion. Today was such a day. One of the most revered leaders of Hamas, the Palestinian terror organisation has moved to America and converted to Christianity.

His father, Hassan Yousef, a highly respected sheik born in al-Ghaniya near Ramallah, is a founding member of Hamas, whose military wing has instigated dozens of suicide bombings and other attacks against Israel since it was formed in 1987.

Read more from the news.com.au site or an interview on this blog. Whilst I’m thinking about it you may want to pray for his protection as well!

Whilst in Australia the Pentecostal scene has been rocked by the Michael Gulglielmucci revelations, over in the USA those place any stead in the revival/outpourings surrounding Lakeland and Todd Bentley in particular have been rocked by news of his marriage break up and involvement with another staff member.

In the midst of it all Dutch Sheets as placed a statement on his website that makes some unusual but very pleasing admissions. He does this on behalf of the Charismatic movement. It addresses some of the concerns I have [being an ex AOG'er]. (more…)

Clive Hamilton is a bright spark.  In fact so bright, that it is ‘Professor Clive Hamilton’ to you thanks.  Despite his academic credentials and the substantial track record he has as a thinker [Professor Hamilton founded the Australia Institute think tank, which he left in February after 14 years.], he has come up with an absolute corker of an idea which I think should be nominated for the Darwin Awards. World Youth Day has come and gone in thoroughly [or supposedly] secular Australia.  Our t.v. screens have been filled night after night with endless streams of shiny, happy, bright, young international things marching happily along, singing and proclaiming their faith in Jesus. (more…)

The Absence of Anger July 16, 2008

During my time in Zimbabwe, I came across some common themes when speaking to people that really surprised me. Firstly, more often than not, people I spoke to believed in God and prayed regularly, especially for their needs.

More surprisingly, I did not find one person who was angry about the situation. Rather, the people I spoke to were simply resigned. Instead of finding an angry nation plotting to overthrow the incompetent and cruel government of Dictator Robert Mugabe I found people who instead were waiting patiently for change to occur. Why was this? (more…)
